about

For #CreateYourSamples (hosted by @David_Wise), the idea was to make a "tune in a chase genre - fast and with dynamics". And obviously, to create your own sampler instruments and use them.
Let's get the "dynamics" thing out of the way - with a loudness range of 18.4LU, I guess I qualify. (There's also microdynamics, with peak-to-weighted-average >17dB in some sections). "Fast" - the Durchführung (the not-guitar-solo) is at 184.5bpm (the strange number for technical reasons), which puts it into a presto range. Along the way, two heptatonic scales, each with two augmented steps, were created.

While initially I had planned otherwise, all of the stuff was recorded or chopped specifically for this project. Sources include modular tombfoolery, household appliances, power tools, ferocious beasts (remember the "Byakko" track?), electric guitars and bass guitars, yuri anime, acoustic instruments, a chiptune synth, old vinyl records (classical and jazz) and drum stems (from 1996 for JANUS with Guido Kremer and from the #twitterchords challenge with Ralf Gruber). And I used this as a workshop on sampling VSTs: there's three things in Kontakt, a fully-loaded Battery patch, three instances of Groove Agent SE and 12 patches running in HALion.

(No, the instrument in the Durchführung section is not a guitar. Thanks, René).

So what is the story - the chase - this thing tells about?

I consider this to be the soundtrack of a speedrun on a stealth game (Splinter Cell, Metal Gear, what have you). There's the need to be stealthy in some sections or pause for a moment, while other sections are full-speed traversion. And there's lots of action, as well as suspense.
